Abstract Art Activity for Mother’s Day

Here is a simple Mother’s day craft activity that can be done before or on Mother’s Day. You can choose to do it before and use the art piece as a gift – for yourself or your Mum. You can also choose to do it as an activity on Mother’s Day – a simple and very satisfying task that will provide lots of fun, practise fine motor skills, produce an art masterpiece, while creating long-lasting memories of the Mother’s Day spent in lockdown!

Let’s start by getting all the resources:

– Piece of card or canvas (white paper will also work, although if it is too thin it may tear)

– Enough bubble wrap to surround your card/canvas

– Packing tape

– Paint

Preparation:

  1. Create a bubble wrap envelope slightly bigger than your chosen/card canvas.

2. Place the latter inside your bubble wrap envelope.

3. Squirt a few random splodges of paints on your card or canvas.

4. Seal shut your bubble wrap envelope.

5. Place the package on your child’s highchair or floor/table where the activity will be taking place.

Time for Fun:

1. Let your child run their fingers along the bubble wrap and become accustomed with the texture.

2. Demonstrate popping a few bubbles while reacting to the sudden sound.

3. Let your child figure out how they too can cause the same effect – using the strength of their little fingers or by bashing with fists.

4. Your child will examine the spread of colours beneath the wrapping paper and occupy themself with trying to figure it out and manipulate it. Encourage them when they cause an effect, sensory or mark-making.

5. Once your child is done with the activity – remove the abstract art from it’s envelope and dry it, ready for framing.

6. You can extend the activity and get the “bubble wrap effect” by putting another piece of card in your bubble wrap envelope and carefully closing it down, pressing, etc.

7. Don’t forget to sign it! Add the date, too – this will be your lockdown Mother’s Day souvenir!
