Sensory Sand Dough Recipe

Everyone knows that here at Little Learners South Colchester, we are BIG fans of playdough! We use it at every session and it’s always a popular material. Better yet, you can make your own at home with this Sensory Sand Dough Recipe!

I have been using TikTok recently to explore new sensory experiences and found the following recipe for sand dough – it’s a super soft version of playdough that is brilliant for mark making as it prints so well. I tweaked the quantities a bit to get my perfect texture and thought I’d share it with you….

You will need:

2 cups flour

2 cups play sand

1 cup salt

2 tbsp cream of tartar

2 tbps oil (I used sunflower)

2 cups boiling water

Mixing bowl

Sieve

Mix all of the dry ingredients together – I sieved everything first to make it a super smooth dough. Add in the oil and mix gently before adding in the water to combine together.

Sand dough beginning to take shape - it starts sticky but keep mixing!

The mixture is quite sticky. Flour your work surface and then knead the dough until it is a smooth consistency, adding more flour if necessary.

This dough will keep in a sealed container or ziplock bag for several weeks. It can also be made in advance and be frozen (I get it out the night before).

Try using a variety of equipment to press into it – not just cutters, but small animals, shells and everyday objects – you might be able to identify some of the items I pressed into my dough in the picture below!
