My Favourite Play Dough Recipe

Many parents at my classes ask for the recipe of the play dough I make. I’ve tried quite a few but the one that’s stuck with me is the one I used to make whilst teaching.

I really like it as I don’t have to bake it – you just add boiling water to the dry ingredients and mix. It literally takes a few minutes!

I must admit it’s not my own, I use the standard recipe from The Imagination Tree website. They have an amazing array of tweaks to the recipe to make different colours, smells and textures although I’ve never tried any. I might make some of the lavender play dough for Amelia soon though!

Play dough ingredients:

• 260g plain flour
• 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
• 180g salt
• 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
• 375ml boiling water
• food colouring or gel/squeezy paint/powder paint (Or even cocoa powder!)
• glycerine

Method

1. Mix the flour, salt, cream of tartar and oil in a large mixing bowl. (If using powder paint or cocoa powder to your recipe, add in now. I usually replace some of the flour with the paint or cocoa powder to make sure the dough doesn’t become too dry.)
2. Add colouring (food colouring or gel/squeezy paint) TO the boiling water.
3. Add the water in small increments to the dry ingredients to make a sticky dough, stirring as you add to make sure it doesn’t become too wet. (Just add more flour if it does).
4. Add the glycerine. I just drizzle a little bit on – it’s never measured!)
5. Leave it to cool down – enough for you to handle it – then take it out of the bowl and knead it vigorously until all of the stickiness has gone. If it stays sticky, add a bit more flour.
6. Enjoy!
