Starting School

All I’ve heard about recently is starting school! It’s been an anxious time for many parents waiting to hear whether their little one has got into their preferred school. Hopefully you are happy with the outcome and looking forward to the opportunities ahead.

As a teacher of 20 years (with 15 of these being EYFS leader), I have experienced those early days in school and know they can be a worry. Parents and teachers all want the best for your child and it is crucial to work together to achieve this.

In the meantime, I thought I would share my best tip for those starting school in September….

Your child is YOUR child – they are a person in their own right and should be treated as such.

💜 Some will be excited about school, some won’t have a clue

💜 Some will be reading, others struggle to show interest in picking up a book at all

💜 Some can count to 3, others can count to 20

💜 Some will be able to hold a pencil to write, others absolutely can’t

IT DOESN’T MATTER!

As long as you are honest with your child’s teacher, they will do their best to use their knowledge and experience to inspire, motivate and help your child to develop and learn at their own level. Eventually they will learn what they need to and that’s the important thing.

I know it’s really hard, but PLEASE try not to compare your child to others. Have confidence in your ability as a parent that you have been doing the best thing for your little one. Of course, you will also continue to do so.

Between now and September, there are many months ahead! Your child will continue to learn in that time – at whatever rate is right for them.

Top tips

I will be sharing my top school starter tips every Saturday evening, so check out my social media posts. Your local Little Learners class leader will also be a fountain of knowledge and information, so book a session and take advantage of that. The activities in classes will also benefit your little one, so it’s a win win!

Above all, starting school is a really exciting experience – wishing you and your little one lots of luck!
