Kinetic clouds

Who doesn’t love kinetic sand! If you haven’t heard of it, it’s amazing sand that moulds and holds its shape so you can build walls, mountains, and cakes, anything you like! Even as an adult I can’t resist playing with it! You can buy it in most good toy shops.

However, it’s really not ideal for any children that are still tempted to put things in their mouths, so really, I wouldn’t recommend for children under 3 years old.

So I’m here to tell you how to make your own, taste safe kinetic sand, also known as cloud dough, play sand and many other names!

All you need is

  • A bowl
  • A spoon
  • 8 cups of flour (plain or self raising)
  • 1 ½ cups of oil
  • Food colouring
  • A large tray (a baking tray will do)

Put your oil and food colouring into a jug and whisk well until blended.

Put your flour into a bowl, add the coloured oil, stir with a spoon first and then use your hands to mould it into a pliable sand mix. It will look a bit like loose sand, but you should be able to mould it into a ball which holds. If it’s to dry add some more oil.

That’s it! Its taste safe (though I do not recommend allowing your little one to eat too much!) and it can be used for so many things and shaped into lots of things! Use bowls, spoons, buckets, cups, cake trays and thing really!

If you have little ones that aren’t ready for building, lie them on their tummies and let them ‘swim’ with their arms, or sit them in it and let them kick with their legs, give them a whisk or spoon and help them stir it. There are so many opportunities for learning!
