Chia Seed Slime Recipe

We had so much fun exploring this chia seed slime recipe at home! It was such a hit that it’s up there as one of our favourite messy play activities and we can’t wait to share at class!

This slime is perfect for enhancing those small hand muscles as children can grasp, pinch, or squish the mixture between their fingers. The texture of the mixture provides a beneficial tactile experience that supports nerve connection in the brain and emotional development.

As messy play is an open ended experience you can add tools or figurines that spark your child’s interests or developmental stage. We decided on blue slime for the sea and added sea life figurines. Creating your messy play experience around your child’s interests will encourage more meaningful play and hopefully capture their attention for longer.


Chia Seed Slime Recipe


  • 1/4 cup of chia seeds
  • 1 1/4 cup of water
  • 2-3 drops of food colour
  • 3 – 5 cups of corn flour 


  • Combine chia seeds, water, and food colour into a large bowl and mix ingredients together
  • Cover the bowl and refrigerate for 4+ hours or leave overnight
  • Remove the bowl from the fridge and begin adding cornflour to the mix. Add cornflour one cup at a time until your desired consistency is achieved. The mixture should be slimy but easily removed from your hands. 
  • When not in use store slime in the fridge for 2-3 days before discarding. You will need to add a small amount of water to the mixture before each play session to reactivate the cornflour component.
